Where did all the weak, whiny, thin-voiced male indie singers come from?

It seems like every new indie band that comes out has the same guy
singing, and he sucks. If you listen to music from 10, 20, 30 years
ago, the men actually sounded manly. Now they all sound like whiny
bratty teens. Some of these bands would be OK if it weren't for the
vocals. I'm talking about Owl City, Cage the Elephant, Death Cab for
Cutie, and all the 100000000 other bands where the singers all sound
exactly alike. Who started this style of singing? Do people
actually like it?
Edit: I don't mean to say all males with higher vocals are bad. Roy
Orbison, Morrissey, Robert Smith, the guy from Sigur Ros, these guys
all have high voices that they use powerfully. I just can't stand the
pinched nasal style of indie singing that's become such a cliche the
last few years. And I can't understand if these guys are singing
like that deliberately, or if we have an entire generation of males
with no hair on their testicles.
